What The Franchise: The Conjuring

Since The Nun is coming to theaters I wanted to give everyone a quick rundown of The Conjureverse . The cinematic universe includes the movies: The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle, Annabelle:Creation, the Annabelle film coming out in 2019 and the short film The Nurse. Also the as yet untitled film about The Crooked Man. And of course, The Nun which comes out on September 7.

So I’m going to start with The Nurse. Simply because I don’t really consider it to be cannon to the series. But I do like it a lot, and I would enjoy seeing “ The Nurse” in a theatrical setting. There was a contest called My Annabelle Creation where fan submitted short films. The cool thing about this contest was the director of Annabelle/the judge of the contest may be incredibly frightening short film Lights Out. Lights Out was eventually made into a movie. Anyway, The Nurse is two minutes long, so I don’t feel like a summary is needed. The jump scare is predictable, but it still good. It actually reminds me a lot of Lights Out. So here it is.

So let’s get to the main stuff I’m going to do this WTF in a chronological order so it’s easier to understand what’s going on.

Annabelle Creation

The year is 1943, Mr. and Mrs. Mullins seven-year-old child Annabelle is killed in a car accident by the way Mr. Mullins is doll maker. Now the year is 1955. An orphanage closest down. The Mullin’s let some of the orphan girls and a nun (no not that nun) live there. They tell the girls not to go on Annabelle’s locked room. But, since this is a horror film, a little girl named Janice goes in. To be fair, she is enticed by something saying “find me” and somehow the door to Annabelle’s room unlocks itself. Annabelle’s closet was locked but Janice locates the key and find a doll. And like I totally get that were supposed to find a doll scary, but I think this doll is quite beautiful, but maybe a little dirty. Anyway this unleashes a demon whose hands are rated E for everyone, but especially Janice. And man, Janice has enough to deal with because it’s the 50s and she’s an orphan, and she has polio. Even worse... her name is Janice, which is one of the ugliest American names to exist. I’m sorry but have you ever been bullied by someone and subsequently hated their name? Yeah, I hate the name Janice, and the name Alison.
So the demon is still messing with Janice and lets her know that it wants her soul. So she tries to go downstairs to get away. But since she has to use a lift, the demon throws her down to the first floor. This is the best scene in the movie and probably one of the scariest moments in the whole series. Now, Janice is in a wheel chair. Janice tells Sister Charlotte about the demon....and in a very uncharacteristic move for a Catholic nun in the 50s, she doesn’t believe her.
(OK real talk I’m pissed at the church is pretty much getting away with what happened at St. Joseph’s orphanage and probably other places as well.)
The demon drags Janice into a shed where the demon possessed her. Janice’s BFF Linda can tell Janice is acting off. So she narcs Janice out to Mr. Molli’s. Linda let him know Janice went into Annabelle’s room and took the doll. Obviously the demon is mad AF and killed Mr. Mollins. He uses Janice’s body to do it. So, the good news is that Janice can walk again. Linda throws the doll down a well. The doll tries to take Linda down with her. Sister Charlotte saves her. After that, Sister Charlotte talks to Mrs. Mullins, who is wearing a mask because the demon disfigured her. Mrs. Mullins spills the tea. After Annabelle died, they prayed to literally anything to see her again. Obviously a demon answers the families prayers and ... yeah they did get to see Annabelle, kinda. However the husband and wife got punked and the obvious demon’s essence got put into a doll.  The demon is not satisfied with the doll, it wants a human host. So they locked the door in the closet and put Bible pages on the closet walls in order to contain the demon. Mrs. Mullins reveals the reason they open their home to the orphans. It’s to repent and atone for playing with demons.
Well, the edge lord demon crucifies Mrs. Esther Mullins. Sister Charlotte gets slammed against the wall and orphans know that’s their cue to leave the house. Linda is hiding from possessed Janice. She gets saved by Sister Charlotte. Sister Charlotte locks the doll and Janice in the closet. Janice escape through a hole in the wall. When the cops come, they only find the doll. Janice is adopted by the Higgins family, at her insistence they call her Annabelle.
12 years later Janice/Annabelle and her man join a cult. They murder the Higgins and the next-door neighbors hear.
The end scene shows The Nun walking the halls of a Romanian monastery. The candles go out.
Now I’m gonna be real with you, I’m not gonna front. I love Annabelle creation the best I spent the most time on that one because I rewatch often. I’m purposely being vague about some things so I can do a Hollywood versus history on the Warren’s. Also I obviously want you guys to see the movies.

Annabelle
John and Mia Form hear their neighbors getting straight up murdered. The wife, Mia calls the police while she and John the husband are attacked. He is extra worried because his wife Mia is heavily pregnant. She’s also a doll collector which....I mean....it’s a horror movie of course she’s a doll collector.
So the police arrive and the woman flips her own throat while holding me is new with stall. It’s rebuilt the attackers were the neighbor’s daughter Annabelle and her mans. They were both in a cult.
Mia and Jon’s house starts to act real haunted. Mia gives birth to a baby named Leah. They rent a Pasadena apartment to try and avoid what they assume is a ghost. But with the audience get that it’s a demon that wants Mia’s body as a host. A lot of boring and a relevant stuff happens the great Alfre Woodard is in this and that’s pretty cool. I feel like her character was pretty much a waste. Anyway the demon takes the body of their priest to take the baby to persuade Mia to jump out the window to give the demon her body. In exchange for Leah’s life. Alfre Woodard saves the day because she wanted to atone for her daughter Ruby’s death.
This is one of the many ways this stupid movie could’ve been improved. Wouldn’t it have been better if Evelyn (Alfre) was driving the vehicle that killed Annabelle? James Wan directed this and Saw (2014) so you cannot tell me that man does not love when things go full circle.
Anyway, Evelyn’s dead. The demon and doll are gone. Six months later Debbie’s mom buys the doll from antique shop.

The Conjuring
Husband and wife iconic duo ™️  Ed and Lorraine Warren meet Annabel via Debbie. Since Annabelle is like mega possessed, they take the doll to their creepy museum. Later on , Ed and Lorraine are helping out with an exorcism. Lorraine has a vision of her husband’s death. She’s obviously like #overit when it comes to the paranormal. However, Roger and Caroline’s haunted house gets her right back on her bullshit. An evil witch named Bathsheba sacrificed her one week old baby to the devil. And when she killed herself, she cursed the land. Ed and Lorraine exorcise Miss Bathsheba and her lil curse from the property. The Catholic Church lets them know they are needed in Long Island.… Which BTW I am going to try and find a legitimate reason as to why the Amityville horror was kind of glossed over. It’s one of my favorite haunting stories. And, probably one of the most famous haunted houses in America. There have been six movies since 2005 remake and they’re literally all bad. I saw Amityville, The Awakening for free on Google play. And I still want my money back. Another Amityville horror film is being released in October. I’m not too sure if I’ll see it.

The Conjuring 2
Aight, this is literally what I was just talking about but yeah there in the Amityville house. Lauren gets another version of Ed’s death. This time the nun (yes that nun)is in the premonition. They go to England to investigate the Enfield poltergeist. The family’s youngest daughter named Janet is being hunted by Bill Wilkins a.k.a. the crooked man. He says they are in his house! Anyway, Lorraine has another vision where The Nun appears in Ed’s study.  It comes out of a painting Ed did. The nun screeches something while It bum rushes Lorraine. Lorraine has another vision of Ed dying. This scene was the standout of the film! So, it’s apparent that Bill isn’t the problem Valek is. When Lorraine screams Valek, aka The Nun’s “name” she sends it back to Hell.

Overall, I do like the franchise I already had an interest in the warrants, so it’s cool to see a reimagining of everything that happened. I don’t want to inconsistent polity of the films. The Conjuring and Annabelle Creation are great for the conjuring two is OK and Annabelle is just bad maybe this is an unpopular opinion but what upsets me is that the movies are not getting better or worse over time. The Conjureverse is like a box of chocolates,  you never know what you’re going to get. This makes me excited and anxious to see The Nun.
